01 /How to Play
- A striped grating pattern will appear at decreasing contrast levels.
- Indicate whether you can see a pattern (YES) or whether the screen looks blank (NO).
- The contrast decreases with each correct detection — find your threshold.
- Complete all rounds — your contrast sensitivity score is calculated.
- Lower threshold = better vision.
02 /The Science
Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measures the visual system's ability to detect spatial luminance differences across a range of spatial frequencies. Unlike standard Snellen acuity (20/20), CSF captures the full range of visual performance. Contrast sensitivity begins declining in the mid-30s and accelerates after 60, often before any decline in standard acuity is detectable. It is used clinically to assess early cataracts, glaucoma, and amblyopia.
