02 /The Science
The Dark Triad, conceptualized by Paulhus and Williams (2002), identifies three overlapping but distinct personality constructs that share a tendency toward social aversion. Narcissism is measured using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI); Machiavellianism via the Mach-IV scale; and psychopathy via the Self-Report Psychopathy scale. Subclinical levels of these traits are found throughout the general population and correlate with leadership emergence, risk tolerance, and persuasion effectiveness โ as well as interpersonal conflict and ethical violations.

- High scores on any dimension are not inherently negative โ context matters.
- Narcissism at moderate levels correlates with confidence and leadership.
- Machiavellianism predicts strategic thinking and negotiation skill.
- This test measures subclinical traits, not clinical personality disorders.
