02 /The Science
Empathy comprises two distinct components: cognitive empathy (theory of mind — the ability to infer others' mental states) and affective empathy (emotional contagion — the tendency to share others' feelings). Cognitive empathy is mediated by the temporoparietal junction and medial prefrontal cortex; affective empathy by the anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex. Baron-Cohen's Empathy Quotient (EQ) is the most widely used research tool in this domain. Empathy scores correlate inversely with Dark Triad traits and predict prosocial behavior, relationship quality, and therapeutic effectiveness.
