Selective Attention & Interference Resistance Assessment

Distraction Shield

A measure of selective attention and interference resistance. Visual noise surrounds the target — your job is to filter it out and respond only to what matters. The interference grows with each level.

01 /How to Play

  • A target symbol will appear among distractors on screen.
  • Tap the target as fast as possible while ignoring all distractors.
  • Distractors increase in number and similarity each round.
  • Your score is levels completed before accuracy drops below threshold.
  • Speed and accuracy are both measured.

02 /The Science

Selective attention — the ability to focus on relevant stimuli while filtering irrelevant ones — is mediated by top-down control from the prefrontal cortex and bottom-up salience signals from the parietal cortex. The ability to suppress interference is a core component of executive function and strongly predicts academic performance, driving safety, and professional decision-making quality. Distractor interference increases with similarity to the target — a phenomenon called the flanker effect, first described by Eriksen & Eriksen (1974).

03 /Pro Tips

  • Fixate on the center of the display — let peripheral vision flag the target.
  • Don't scan systematically — allow your visual system to detect the target pre-attentively.
  • Resist the urge to confirm — trust your first identification.
  • Maintain steady breathing — anxiety narrows attentional spotlight and increases false alarms.
  • The more similar distractors look to the target, the more processing power you need.
